HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

By invitation only

Our JOAD club is an intermediate-to-advanced team, and joining starts with a conversation. It is not a beginner program — if you're new to archery, request a lesson or training with Coach Marcy first and she'll get you ready.

Membership is by invitation only — every archer meets with Coach Marcy for an evaluation before joining the club.

All club archers are required to have their own approved equipment — the pro shop can help you get set up.

What is JOAD?A USA Archery program for young people +

Junior Olympic Archery Development is a program of USA Archery that teaches archery to young people, awards achievement as archers progress, and lets kids enjoy the sport recreationally or advance to the excitement of competition.

Age DivisionsYeoman through U21 +

Divisions run by calendar year: if your child turns the next class's age at any point in a year — even the last day — they shoot that whole year in the older class. Any archer may shoot UP into an older class at any time. Male and female archers compete in separate divisions.

Bow TypesRecurve · Compound · Fixed Pins · Barebow · Basic Compound +

USA Archery recognizes five equipment classes for JOAD events. The choice is personal preference — every type has its merits and rewards, and you compete against archers with similar equipment.

Recurve — the Olympic bow. Sights (no magnification), stabilizers, adjustable rests, clickers and pressure buttons allowed; fingers only.
Compound — popular at World Archery and national events. Scopes, long stabilizers and release aids allowed.
Fixed Pins — compound with fixed pin sights (no magnification) and a front stabilizer of 12" or less; no sight adjustments once scoring begins.
Barebow — a bow kept bare: rest only, no sights or aiming marks. Riser-mounted weights allowed; the unstrung bow must pass through a 12.2cm ring.
Basic Compound — max 30 lb draw, fingers only, no sight/stabilizer/peep (Genesis-style bows fit here). Offered at some state events but not nationals; BC archers may shoot UP into Compound.
Equipment & RulesBuying right the first time — and what's allowed +

Quality doesn't have to mean expensive — but buying the right target-style equipment the first time saves money and sets your archer up to succeed. Coaches require approved equipment, and many great bows "grow" with your child and carry a lifetime warranty.

Buy through the shack and we'll advise the purchase, fit the bow, handle all future adjustments, include lifetime inspections and a free lesson — and we'll work with other clubs' coaches to make sure the setup meets their requirements.

Arrows — max 9.3mm diameter (23 series); marked with the athlete's name or initials, all identical in fletching, nocks and cresting.
All divisions — no electronic devices on any bow (lighted nocks, sight lights, rangefinders, battery-powered gear). Light sticks only if covered.
Tournament divisions and age groups can vary by event at the director's discretion.
